If you know anything about knives buy it. July 6, 2009 Kevin O'brien (Potomac, MD United States) 23 out of 23 found this review helpful
ok a few things, first this is a full tang knife, and it comes with a fire starter. yes it comes blunter than a butter knife, and yes the rope grip is incredibly uncomfortable. BUT, the hilt has holes with makes re-wrapping the handle with some rope or para-cord very easy, once re-wrapped the handle is comfortable, also the steel is decent quality, so with a little sharpening the knife becomes very usable. bottom line 7$ and 10 minuets of your time and you have yourself a decent knife.
Great little knife February 18, 2010 J. Jarrett (Renovo, Pa) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I was not expecting much when I ordered this knife. I was very surprised. It is a great full tang knife. fits well in a survival, or hunting pack. It does need a little sharpening, and maybe a re wrapping on the handle, but most of us would sharpen, and work the handle for our selves any way. At this price you can have one for in the glove box, your hunting pack, where ever. Throw it in and forget it, will be there when you kneed it. The fire steel is of good quality, and the thumb grooves on the back work well as a striker. The sheath is just sewn canvas, and there is no retainer for the striker, but don't let that keep you away from this knife. For $10 this is a way better knife than you will get from any flea market, and being really just on piece of steel will be very durable.
A Nice Suprise May 12, 2010 Jeffrey (RICHMOND, Vatican City State (Holy See)) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I only really bought this survival knife for the firesteel. I just thought of the knife being a nice bonus, but it turned out to be a nice surprise. Larger than I thought, more comfortable than I thought (reviews here don't like the corded grip, however, I found it comfortable enough), and significantly better steel than I thought. Sharpens very well, seems to hold and edge, and because it's so cheap I "tested" it by cutting up several large cardboard boxes thoroughly and completely through a mop handle. Nice.
Firesteel is fantastic too. I'm going to re-sharpen it up a bit more and throw it in the glovebox or take it with me camping. It's the perfect thing to toss and forget about, until a day comes around where you might need it, or maybe REALLY need it, and it would become invaluable.
When I got it from Amazon it was in a plain white box with large letters, "HUNTING KNIFE", all over it which I thought was funny. An unrelated side note, for some reason the box it came in was completely unsealed, and worse it was a strange simple box that kind of just folded in on itself that could be opened very easily.
Grey Eagle Knife Set November 15, 2009 Uncle Safety 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
When you spend less than $10 on a product, you expect to get what you paid for. I expected that, and was willing to live with it.
WOW! Grey Eagle has found the "Import Of The Year"!!!!!! This is a knife of a quality I did not expect! The "fire steel" is of a high quality that was also unexpected.
Great combo set.
(by the way, I bought 3, all have been used by me and as great gifts)
I will by again from Grey Eagle!
It is really hard to argue with the price. June 20, 2010 Julia Journey fan (Abq, New Mexico) Pros:
* It is extremely inexpensive!
* The knife itself is very durable; essentially you are getting a slab of thick steel with a point out of the box.
* Comes with a OK fire steel (see paragraph below)
* Because its so incredibly cheap, you can do just about anything with it.
Cons:
* The blade comes dull as a butter knife.
* The fire steel is not quality.
* The cord handle is badly wrapped and can be uncomfortable to those with bigger hands.
The fire steel works, but it no where approaches the quality of the other fire steels found on this site and elsewhere; like the Swedish Army and Scout models for example. The sparks are not as big, they do not burn as hot, and it does not last nearly as long as a comparable sized fire steel(scout). I also had trouble using different methods of striking the fire steel. Butter knifes, kitchen knifes and hacksaw blades (all of which are effective on my other 6 fire steels) all proved unreliable; in fact the only full proof way of getting the fire steel to spark seemed to be using the included blade(Note: You should never use the cutting edge of a good knife to strike a fire steel!).
I was incredibly surprised by the knife itself. Like I stated above, the blade comes dull, but this can be easily fixed. Next I re wrapped the handle with para cord for a more comfortable grip. After I did this, I decided to take the blade with me on a day hike to run it through some field tests. I was able to chop through several small branches using only the knife and a rock. The edge did not hold all that long, but I expected this. I was also able to use it as a rudimentary pry bar; I would not normally do this with my other knifes due to the price being so prohibitive. The only draw back of the blade is its shape; I find it very unwieldy, particularly when performing tasks that require precision.
Overall, if your are looking for a quality fire steel, look elsewhere. If your are looking for a decent backup knife, that can be used as pry bar in emergency's you may have just found you match. For me, it has earned a permanent place in my boot as a fourth blade.
